I've seen pretty bad conditions in pet stores. A rat I was looking at in Petsmart was obviously pregnant, obviously because she was in a cage with boys. At Pet Co the salesperson was terrified of rats, and she knew nothing about them. She held them by their tails and squeezed them way too tightly. That may be why one of them was sick. But since they were put in separate cages, I bought the one that looked healthy and she is fine to this day.

I didn't know that red-eyed rats had trouble seeing when I bought my ratty, but she gets along just fine now except sometimes she doesn't notice when someone is right next to her and jumps when that person moves. But I wouldn't trade her for anything. I was a little nervous about red-eyed rats at first, but she is a sweetheart. Most of the time we are on the computer and I let her crawl all over the keys. So if there is any spelling errors, blame her!

I just got my first rat about five weeks ago. She is an albino that I got from Pet Co. I was first looking at another rat, but the other female was very sick. I only halfheartedly decided to look at their other choice, but I'm glad I did.

Wal-mart! There's a brand of bedding exactly like Carefresh avaliable at Wal-mart; its a kind of papery, dry pulpish stuff if you don't know what it is. It's not dusty, and not TOO bad price-wise ($3 and change for a 10 liter bag). My rattie loves it: she reacted REALLY badly to pine shavings, and I find that this bedding is a perfect solution! It's called Crittercare, I believe. Congrats on your rat, by the way! they are VERY rewarding pets.

Good News! ( I think). My mom has given permission for a companion rat! Bad News: the rat is going to be my little sister's, and its going to have to be in my rat's cage. Yay for ratty companions!

Rats can get pretty lonely if they're alone. It's also better for their health if you have more than one. Read this essay I found: http://www.rmca.org/Resources/apair.txt
My female rat is named Maisey; after maisey mouse, which doesn't really make sense, but it fits her. My mum and older sister named her; they started calling her that, and I didn't want that to be her name, but I called her 'Maisey' by accident once, and it stuck. However, if I ever get a male black rat, I'm gonna name him Renegade. ; )
